About Me

Smudge is proof that sometimes the sweetest relationships are the ones you have to take a little time to build.

This handsome boy is sensitive, intelligent, curious and wonderfully independent. He’s not the kind of cat who will walk into a new home, flop on the floor and immediately demand belly rubs. In fact, Smudge started out scared of pretty much everyone and spent a lot of time tucked away in his safe spots, quietly watching the world around him.

But his foster family gave him exactly what he needed: time, patience, consistency and the freedom to come out of his shell at his own pace.

And boy, has it paid off.

Smudge now comes when his foster calls his name, happily plays with his toys in the evenings, comes out for treats, and will even crawl across his foster while they’re lying in bed when he decides it’s treat time. He has also started choosing to seek out affection on his own terms — and when Smudge decides he wants attention, it is VERY special.

He can still be nervous and prefers having cozy hiding spots where he can retreat when the world feels like a bit much. He may startle if approached too quickly, and his confidence with touch can vary. His future family will need to understand that trust is something Smudge builds rather than something he gives away immediately.

But underneath that cautious exterior is a playful, silly, sweet boy with a big personality. He has the absolute best resting grumpy face, enjoys his treats, loves to play, and is becoming more confident every day.

Smudge isn't looking for someone who needs an instant lap cat.

He's looking for someone who will look at a nervous little guy hiding in the shadows and say, “That's okay. I'll wait.”

Because when Smudge finally decides you're his person, you don't just get a cat who tolerates you.
